WALTER & ZONIEL

Walter & Zoniel explore everyday access points to the sublime, and the manner in which we allow or disallow ourselves these experiences. Through a conceptual and innovative process-based practice they often expand or develop entirely new processes in order to create their artwork. Working in a spectrum of artistic mediums primarily conceptual process photography and large scale installation.

Walter & Zoniel will be the inaugural artists in residence, from 25 August 2021 to 15 November 2021. The art duo will be creating two new series of works under the title ‘Hidden Nature’, exploring themes of connecting to the sublime via messages hidden within our natural environment. An Effort residency will include a series of talks and open studio about the residents’ practice, as their work unfolds.

Walter & Zoniel are represented by MTArt Agency and CEA Scott. Their work is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery and Government Art Collection. They have held installations and shown work in The Tate Britain, Frieze, Miami Basel, Liverpool & Venice Biennale.

They were selected for their unique ability to engage a wide spectrum of audiences in unique and curious viewpoints about the world.

Matter Of The Cosmos

Emerging series

During their residency at An Effort, Walter & Zoniel have been exploring the concept of Essential Connection. Creating a series of works reflecting single points of unification on a cellular and cosmic plane. In a time when definitions can be more divisive than unifying, the artists explorations are both timely and timeless. Realising their first purely painted works, in colourful, abstract minimalism.

Each vibrant monochrome painting represents the ratio of space to solid present in every single atom in the universe that we reside within. Atoms are 99.9% space and 0.01% solid.

The 1 : 0.01 Matter Of The Cosmos paintings’ sides are imbibed with poetry, inviting a meditation upon the vast and layered space that binds us. Each impasto stroke is both a conceptual and literal representation of this core magnificent truth.  Each one metre square work symbolises space and contains a one millimetre dot symbolising solidity.

Exhibited with magnifying glasses for participants to play with the nature of their observation and interaction and to magnify the detail that the solid element of our world is so minuscule.

This is an ongoing exploration for the artists, seeing them imbibing works with visible and hidden messages within nature.
